Myopia
Myopia or nearsightedness occurs when light rays focus in front of the retina, causing objects seen at a distance to be indistinct. Treatment is with glasses, contact lenses or surgically with Lasik treatment.

Hyperopia
Hyperopia or farsightedness occurs when light rays focus behind the retina, causing close objects to be indistinct. Treatment is with glasses, contact lenses or , depending on the degree, with Lasik treatment. LTK ( laser thermal keratoplasty ) is a more rescent method where two, consentric, radially aligned rings of 6mm and 7mm respectively, that apply 16 burns to the cornea, appears to offer the optimum amount of hyperopia reduction. Astigmatism It is an irregular curvature of the cornea or lens, or both. This results in a distorted image because light cannot focus on a single point on the retina. This condition can affect vision at all distances and may be associated with either myopia or hyperopia. Normally, this can be corrected with glasses, contact lenses as well as Lasik treatment.

Presbyopia
The eye can be compared to a camera. It can see well in bad light conditions, but the ability to focus far and near makes it a very special "camera". Reading problems will start to occur at the age of about 40 years and affects just about everybody after 45. When the eyes are focusing close up, the lens changes its shape. The diameter increases and light rays are focused on the retina. As we get older the lens grows and when the space are too limited to adjust its shape, reading problems start to occur.

Are you always searching for your reading glasses? Have you ever wished that there were a solution to this problem? When you are in front of the television your glasses are either in the bedroom, kitchen, car or even at the office. With the development of technology there are new options available which include monovision, using specialized intra-ocular lenses during cataract surgery and even laser surgery.

Feel free to discuss these with options with our surgeons.
